Tom began his studies at Moss Landing in Fall 2002. He is currently working on his thesis project to complete his MS in the Ichthyology lab at MLML. His thesis is entitled ‘Trends in Abundance Surveys of Nearshore Rocky Reef Fishes in Central California’. This project involves using the generalized linear model to examine trends, precision and sources of variability in population abundance datasets. During his time at Moss Landing, Tom worked on field projects with Dr. Starr (and other MLML, UCSC and CDFG researchers) sampling kelp forest fishes in Carmel Bay, CA using commercial fishing gears. Tom also conducted surveys of a fish assemblage associated with a rhodolith bed in Baja California Sur in collaboration with Dr. Foster and other MLML researchers, published in Ciencias Marinas (December 2007). He worked with the habitat restoration and planning and benthic invertebrate/invasive species components of the MLML Benthic Lab. During his stint at MLML he has also held positions conducting field and lab work for CDFG, PSMFC and MLML Marine Pollution Studies Lab. His current position is Website and Database Coordinator for the Central and Northern California Ocean Observing System (CeNCOOS), based at MBARI. Tom received a bachelor’s of science degree in fisheries science from the University of Washington’s School of Fisheries in June 2000. He also attended Oberlin College and the Sea Education Association as an undergraduate. His hobbies include surfing, mountain biking and fishing.
